Syria

Maybe the Middle East needs dictators to keep sectarian violence from getting out of control. Which kills more people and is worse for the country: dictatorship or sectarianism?

Something to seriously consider before we get all gung ho about democracy in the Arab world.

  1. It depends on what one means by ‘democracy’. In most countries it seems to mean choosing your dictators for the next few years from one of just two viable parties—the People become redundant on close of polling on election day.

    Or do you mean (horrors!) “Government of the people, by the people, for the people”? Sorry, Friend, it just doesn’t exist …
